Archie B. Atwell, the Smyth County Farm Bureau president since 1994, has been on the state board since April 1998. The burley tobacco, beef and dairy producer, serves as chairman of the Dairy Committee and as vice-chairman of the Burley Tobacco Committee.

Atwell previously served as vice president of the local organization and served on the board of directors from 1971 to 1983.

He currently serves as chairman of his local Soil and Water Conservation Board. He previously served as vice chairman of this board. He also serves on the Planning Commission of Smyth County.

He has taught vocational agriculture at Bland High School and worked with various young farmer programs.

He has also been a 4-H club leader, has served with the Ruritans, Masons, and on the boards of Southern States Cooperative, Inc. and the local Farm Service Agency.

Atwell holds a B.S. degree in Dairy Science from Virginia Tech.
