Agriculture in Our County
One of Virginia’s southernmost counties, Halifax is also one of the state’s most important agricultural areas.
According to the 2002 census of agriculture, Halifax generates $27.7 million in agricultural cash receipts.
Farmers in this Southside Virginia county make their money from the sale of beef cattle, hogs, tobacco, hay and a variety of fruits and vegetables.
Halifax producers raised almost 19,000 head of cattle in 2002, making it one of the largest cattle counties in the region.
In addition, Halifax County is home to 26 hog farms, on which are raised more than 13,000 head of hogs and pigs.
Tobacco is another mainstay of agriculture in Halifax. Farmers harvested 4,345 acres of flue-cured tobacco in 2002, ranking the county second in the production of that variety.
On almost half of the county’s 905 farms, farmers raised hay as supplemental feed for beef cattle. They harvested 23,000 acres of hay in 2002, the most recent agricultural figures.
In addition to traditional crops and livestock, Halifax is the home of Turbeville, where an annual cantaloupe festival is held.
