Agriculture in Our County

Despite the growth of highly developed urban and suburban areas in Henrico County, 185 farms continue to hold their ground on 28,135 acres of fertile farmland. They provide much-welcomed open space in an area that is becoming increasingly dense.

The county borders the capital city of Richmond on the west, north and east, and lies between the James and Chickahominy rivers. Most farms are located in the eastern half of the county.

More than half of the county’s farmland grows crops such as wheat, corn, soybeans and nursery and greenhouse crops. Hay acreage exceeded 2,000 in 2002.

There are 1,600 head of cattle in the county, most of which are for beef. A small number of dairy cows, hogs and pigs, sheep and lambs and poultry are also raised in Henrico County.
