Nestled in the foothills of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains, Nelson County ’s agriculture could be defined by the first three letters of the alphabet.

Apples and beef cattle are the mainstays for county farmers.

Nearly 12,000 head of cattle are grazed on the lush hills in this Piedmont county.

And its 953 acres of apple trees make Nelson County the top apple-growing county in the Piedmont area.

In addition, farmers here grow hay and grapes and raise more than 1,200 head of sheep.
