Agriculture in Our County
New Kent County is home to Colonial Downs Racetrack, which is a significant part of the state’s $1 billion horse industry.
New Kent, which borders the York and Chickahominy rivers in eastern Virginia, has 100 farms and 19,303 acres of farmland. Nearly 50 residents call farming their principal occupation. Half of the farms have cattle, and a few have laying hens.
In addition, the county had 4,000 acres of corn, 2,800 acres of wheat, 6,200 acres of soybeans and 1,300 acres of hay in 2002.
Overall, New Kent County’s agriculture generated more than $3.1 million in cash receipts in 2002, according to the most recent census of agriculture.
