Prince Edward County is a significant player in Virginia’s tobacco industry. It is one of the state’s largest producers of flue-cured, burley and fire-cured tobacco.
Located near Farmville, Prince Edward is bordered on the north by the Appomattox River and the southeast by U.S. Route 360.
The 2002 Census of Agriculture reports that this county has 395 farms on 78,851 acres, and farming is the principal occupation of 221 Prince Edward County residents.
Farmers here produced more than 300 acres of tobacco, 1,200 acres of corn and 13,000 acres of hay in 2002. In addition, the county has soybeans and orchards.
Nearly 13,000 head of cattle, mostly beef and some dairy, are in Prince Edward, along with hogs, sheep and laying hens.
Overall, Prince Edward County’s market value of production totaled $11.8 million in 2002, according to the most recent Census of Agriculture.
