Agriculture in Our County

Roanoke County surrounds the city of Roanoke. But despite its location near an urban area, Roanoke County is one of the state's most productive farm counties.

Within the green, rolling land are 342 farms.

Beef cattle operations make up the bulk of the county’s farm enterprises with 3,000 beef cows dotting the hilly landscape.

Because of its large cattle population, Roanoke produces more than 7,000 acres of hay annually, in addition to its sizeable pasture acreage. Farmers here also plant several hundred acres of wheat and corn for grain.
