Agriculture in Our County
Situated in the beautiful Southwest Virginia mountains near the Tennessee border, Scott County is beef and burley country.
Farmers raise more beef cattle and burley tobacco than any other commodity.
Because of Scott's elevation and rolling terrain, pastureland and hay crops do quite well here, affording farmers the necessary food source for their animals.
Of Scott County's 1,490 full- and part-time farming operations, more than 1,000 raise either beef cattle, burley tobacco or both.
In fact, there are more than 25,000 head of cattle and more than 1,150 acres of burley tobacco dotting the Scott County landscape. Hay acreage exceeds 21,000.
Scott County has other agricultural enterprises. County farmers also raise nursery and greenhouse stock, milk cows, hogs and pigs, sheep and lambs and chicken layers and pullets.
Many of the livestock producers also raise corn for their animals.
