Agriculture in Our County

Stafford County, which is becoming more and more a bedroom community of Washington D.C., borders the Potomac River on the east and the Quantico Marine Corps Base to the north.

Yet, this county just north of Fredericksburg has 236 farms and more than 26,100 acres of farmland. Nearly 120 residents call farming their principal occupation.

Stafford has more than 3,000 head of cattle, mostly beef, as well as a few hogs and laying hens. Farmers here typically plant 1,500 acres in corn and 5,500 acres in hay.

Overall, this fast-growing county generated $2.5 million in agriculture cash receipts in 2002.
