Agriculture in Our County

Surry County agriculture is typical of most southeastern Virginia counties. Farmers grow a variety of crops, including wheat and cotton and raise a smattering of beef cattle.

But what sets Surry County apart is its peanut and hog production.

The warm climate and fertile soil enabled Surry farmers here to harvest nearly 3,000 acres of peanuts in 2002.

To help feed the animals, farmers grow thousands of acres of feed corn and soybeans.

In fact, the 16,000 acres of soybeans grown here places Surry County among the state's top10 soybean-producing counties.
