ATV Safety Tips
The following safety tips may help avoid accidents involving all terrain vehicles (ATVs).
Read and follow the ATV owner’s manual, including warnings and labels. |
Perform a pre-ride check of: tires/wheels, controls/cables, lights/electrical system, oil/fuel, chain/drive-train. |
Complete an ATV operator’s training course, or spend time practicing with someone experienced. |
Always wear a helmet approved for ATV use, inspect after every accident or every two to four years. |
Never allow passengers on an ATV, this will upset the balance of the ATV. |
Never allow anyone to operate an ATV who has not been properly trained. |
Never allow anyone to operate an ATV who is under the influence of alcohol or drugs. |
Always wear approved eye protection, gloves, boots and preferably long sleeve pants and shirt. |
Know and follow laws that apply to ATV operation. |
Use caution on unfamiliar terrain, watch for hidden or unexpected hazards, and avoid excessive speeds. |
Never attempt "wheelies", jumps or other stunts. ATVs are not "toys". |
Never allow anyone under 18 to operate an ATV. |
Be especially careful approaching hills, turns, obstacles, or operating on rough terrain. |
Do not operate ATVs on pavement, ATVs are not designed for paved surfaces and may be difficult to control. |
Ask permission before riding on private property. Leave the area clean. Ride in pairs in case mechanical problems or an accident occurs. |
