The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration estimates the following.

In 1998, an average of 114 people died each day in motor vehicle crashes. That's one death every 13 minutes.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for children from 5 to 14 years old.

In 1998, 20 percent of the children under 15 years old who were killed in crashes were killed in alcohol-related crashes.

Minimum drinking age laws have saved 18,220 lives since 1975.

About three in every 10 Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some point in their lives.

Thirty-eight percent of the total traffic fatalities for the year were alcohol related.

Speeding was a contributing factor in 30 percent of all fatal crashes in 1998.

The ejection rate for occupants of light trucks in fatal crashes was more than twice the rate for passenger car occupants.
