14 Easy Ways to Avoid Accidents This Winter

Brush up on your winter driving skills with our 14 easy ways to avoid auto accidents this winter!

When the road turns wet, slick or icy, it’s important to use extra caution when driving. The most common mistake drivers make is having an overconfidence in their own driving ability or their cars ability to handle poor conditions.

Follow these tips to make driving in hazardous winter weather safer this season.

  1. The No. 1 rule when you drive in snow and ice is to slow down.
  2. Get an early start; give yourself extra time, and take it slow.
  3. Leave extra room between yourself and the vehicle in front of you.
  4. Keep your gas tank at least half full at all times.
  5. Top off your windshield washer fluid to keep your windshield clear, and if needed stop to clear your sightlines.
  6. Use the car defrost and a clean cloth to keep the windows free of fog.
  7. Keep your headlights on when your windshield wipers are running; in Virginia it’s the law!
  8. If a traffic light is out, treat it like a stop sign.
  9. Beware of black ice! Even above freezing, ice can form in shady spots or on bridges.
  10. Avoid sudden stops or quick changes in direction.
  11. Brake gently to avoid skidding.
  12. If your vehicle skids, take your foot off the accelerator and steer your car into the skid.
  13. If you have standard brakes, pump them gently; apply steady pressure to anti-lock brakes.
  14. If you get stuck, don’t spin your wheels. That only digs you in deeper.

It’s a good idea to give your car a winter tune-up before bad weather hits. Have a trusted local mechanic do any service work that you cannot do yourself. All cars are different or may need additional attention, so read your owner’s manual and check with your mechanic.

Lastly it’s never a bad idea to review your auto insurance policy to ensure you’re covered for any situation. Talk to your local Virginia Farm Bureau insurance agent today!
